The Broadway community has rallied together for many good causes over the years, and the disaster caused by Hurrican Katrina brought out the usual compassion from the community. A benefit for victims was held on September 25 at the Gershwin Theatre. The event starred Ben Vereen and Liza Minnelli and featured a who's who of Broadway. All profits went to two charities: America's Second Harvest, the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the U.S., and Quilts for Kids, which makes quilts for children from discontinued designer fabric; both charities are working directly with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Members the cast of Wicked produced this show which featured big names of hit shows such as The Light in the Piazza, Hairspray, Mamma Mia! and Wicked.
