Mariette Hartley will begin performances as
Cabaret's Fraulein Schneider on March 7, the same day Jane Summerhays takes over as Fraulein Kost, according to a production spokesperson.
Hartley started her stage career as the protege of theatrical legends Eva La Gallienne and John Houseman. She toured with Houseman's Stratford Shakespeare Festival before working in film. She made her film debut in 1962 when she landed a starring role in
Ride the High Country. Her other feature film credits include
Marnie,
Marooned,
The Return of County Yorga,
The Magnificent Seven Ride!,
1969,
Encino Man and
Snitch. Hartley is best known for her television work. A six-time Emmy nominee, her first television exposure came with the prime time serial,
Peyton Place. She earned the first of her Emmy nominations for the movie-of-the-week
The Last Hurrah and won a Best Actress Emmy for her guest-starring role in a special two hour
Incredible Hulk. Her other Emmy nominations came from her work on
The Halloween That Almost Wasn't,
The Rockford Files,
M.A.D.D.: The Candy Lightner Story and
Goodnight Beantown. She has also won three Clio awards, advertising's highest honor, for her Polaroid commercials with James Garner. Despite her work in Hollywood, Hartley has always maintained her presence in the theater. Her theatrical credits include
The Sisters Rosensweig, Deathtrap, Detective Story, The Miser, Sylvia, Buffalo Gal, Ancestral Voices, Copenhagen and the musicals
The King and I, A Little Night Music and
Mame.
Cabaret currently stars Deborah Gibson as Sally Bowles, Neil Patrick Harris as Emcee, Rick Holmes as Clifford Bradshaw, Alma Cuervo as Fraulein Schneider, Tom Bosley as Herr Schultz, Penny Ayn Maas as Fraulein Kost and Peter Benson as Ernst Ludwig. (Summerhays was originally announced to begin performances on February 21, but her start date was delayed.)
