Multiracial Broadway Production of A Streetcar Named Desire on Tap

Stephen Byrd

A multiracial 'Streetcar' is being planned for Broadway.

Producer Stephen C. Byrd, who controls the rights to mount A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway, is aiming to revive the Tennessee Williams classic with a multiracial cast in the spring of 2011, according to The New York Times. Byrd previously produced a hit 2008 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring an all-black cast that included Terrence Howard, Phylicia Rashad, James Earl Jones and Anika Noni Rose.

Byrd’s plans effectively ends speculation that Liv Ullmann’s acclaimed production of Streetcar starring an all-Australian cast led by Cate Blanchett as Blanche DuBois might transfer to Broadway next season. That mounting, first seen at the Sydney Theater Company, had a sold-out run at BAM in the fall of 2009.

A spokesman for Byrd said that the producer is talking to possible directors and cast members for his proposed revival of Streetcar.
