Ugly Betty co-stars Vanessa Williams (headed for Broadway in Sondheim on Sondheim) and Michael Urie (currently starring off-Broadway in The Temperamentals) will serve as co-hosts for the 76th annual Drama League Awards ceremony and luncheon. The event will be held on May 21 in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
The Drama League Awards pay tribute to the season's best performers by including a group of 60-70 stars nominated for the Distinguished Performance Award on a dais. Actors from both Broadway and off-Broadway shows that opened in the 2009-2010 season are represented.
The Drama League's 3,000 members vote for five competitive awards: Distinguished Performance, Distinguished Production of a Play, Distinguished Production of a Musical, Distinguished Revival of a Play and Distinguished Revival of a Musical. Nominees will be announced on April 20 at Sardi's.
Over the past 75 years, the Distinguished Performance Award has been accorded to a roster of theater legends such as Rosemary Harris, Christopher Plummer, Sir Ian McKellen, Bernadette Peters, James Earl Jones, John Lithgow, Stockard Channing, Glenn Close, Bebe Neuwirth, Cherry Jones, Mary-Louise Parker, Liam Neeson, Harvey Fierstein, Norbert Leo Butz, Christine Ebersole, Patti LuPone and last year’s winner, Geoffrey Rush.
