Dustin Diamond is heading back to high school. The former sitcom star, who shot to fame as freaky, geeky Screech on the sitcom Saved by the Bell, will appear in off-Broadway's The Awesome '80s Prom for six weeks starting May 21, 2010. Ken Davenport, the show's conceiver, director and producer, is revising the script of the interactive show to allow Diamond to play a role he already knows well: himself.
Diamond played Samuel "Screech" Powers on and off from 1989 to 2000 in Saved by the Bell and spin-offs Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. More recently, he appeared on the reality weight-loss show Celebrity Fit Club and as himself in films like Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star and, yes, his own leaked sex tape. Diamond also wrote a memoir entitled Behind the Bell in 2009.
The Awesome '80s Prom, which opened on January 23, 2004, is the long-running interactive experience set at the Wanaget High's Senior Prom in 1989. All your favorite characters from your favorite '80s movies are at The Prom, from the Captain of the Football Team to the Asian Exchange Student, from the Geek to the Hottie Head Cheerleader, and they're all competing for Prom King and Queen. In the end, the audience decides who wins, all while moonwalkin' to retro hits like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go."
