How does history get all sexypants? That’s what Broadway.com was determined to find out when we slipped into rehearsal with Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the emo rock musical that starts performances at Broadway's Jacobs Theatre on September 21. After their thrice-extended off-Broadway run at the Public Theater, Prez Jackson and friends like John Adams, John Quincy Adams and James Monroe are making their way uptown, with many of the original cast members reprising their roles. The cast of characters may read like a dog-eared American history textbook, but the story is anything but stale. Andrew Jackson doubled the size of the United States, created the Democratic Party and—if Bloody Bloody is to be believed—kicked ass, broke hearts and rocked out. Though fans desperately try to believe otherwise, Bloody Bloody star Benjamin Walker wasn’t born in the tight pants Broadway now expects from our seventh president.
