On a physical level, Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries certainly lives up to its name. At once dark and romantic, the show explores the wounded relationship of Kayleen (Jennifer Carpenter) and Doug (Pablo Schreiber) over the course of 30 years as they intersect at the most bizarre—and often bloody—intervals. From the elementary school nurse’s office to various hospitals, the two childhood friends compare scars and the physical calamities that keep drawing them together.
