Producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein are developing the 2004 Oscar-nominated film Finding Neverland into a Broadway musical, according to The New York Observer. Centering on Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie, the show will feature music by Grey Gardens' Scott Frankel and lyrics by Michael Korie. No dates have been announced for the production, but a reading to attract investors is expected to take place shortly.
Finding Neverland follows the story of Barrie and his relationship with the family of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies. Llewelyn Davies' children eventually became Barrie's inspiration to write the Pan story.
The film starred Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie and Kate Winslet as Sylvia Llewelyn Davies as well as Julie Christie, Radha Mitchell, Dustin Hoffman and Freddie Highmore. Marc Foster directed the movie, which was based on Allan Knee's play, The Man Who Was Peter Pan. Neverland received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
The Weinsteins are also hoping to adapt other films from the Miramax library to the stage, including Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Chocolat and Cinema Paradiso. The Weinstein Company has been listed among the producers of 20 Broadway shows since 2007, including Billy Elliot, The Addams Family and the current revival of That Championship Season.
