As Million Dollar Quartet nears its July 28 start date at a new home, off-Broadway's New World Stages, Broadway.com asked readers to name their favorite jukebox musical of all time. The votes have been tallied. Take a look below to find out which shows rank as the top three!
1. Jersey Boys (2005), 33%
Fans think the long-running Jersey Boys is too good to be true. The musical, which tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' rise to fame through their many chart-topping hits, took home four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as trophies for original stars John Lloyd Young and Christian Hoff. The show continues to play to sold out houses at the August Wilson Theatre.
2. Mamma Mia! (2001), 21%
Readers also love walking down the aisle at Mamma Mia! The wedding-themed musical incorporates the songs of iconic pop group ABBA as a young bride searches for the identity of her father during the weekend of her nuptials. The show earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and was adapted for the big screen in 2008. Mamma Mia! is about to celebrate its 10th birthday at the Winter Garden Theatre.
3. American Idiot (2010), 15%
Inspired by the Green Day album of the same name, American Idiot follows three twentysomething friends whose dreams of rock star glory are sidelined by drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies and military duties. The Tony-nominated musical will launch a national tour this fall. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who stepped into the role of St. Jimmy during the Broadway run, is even eyeing a starring role in an upcoming film adaptation of the show.
