Stage and screen veteran Catherine McCormack will star in the premiere of Helen Edmundson’s The Heresy of Love with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Nancy Meckler will direct the play, which begins performances at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on February 2, 2012, and opens on February 8. No other casting has been announced.
McCormack will play the central role of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the writer of House of Desires. A nun with a gift for writing plays and poetry, she was celebrated by the court but her success created alarm and jealousy within the Church.
Among McCormack’s many films are Loaded, Braveheart, Spy Game and Dangerous Beauty. Her stage credits include The 39 Steps, A Doll’s House and Six Characters in Search of an Author.
The Heresy of Love will feature design by Katrina Lindsay and lighting design by Ben Ormerod. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through March 9, 2012.
