A new monarch took the off-Broadway throne on November 8, when Sam Waterston officially bowed in the title role of King Lear at the Public Theater. The tragic King, whose decision to divide his kingdom among his three daughters leads him towards madness and his land towards chaos, is one of the great roles of Shakespearean canon.
