Tony winner Susan Stroman will once again direct and choreograph The Producers. Stroman, who won Tony Awards in 2001 for her direction and choreography of the original Broadway production of The Producers, will helm the forthcoming Hollywood Bowl production. The Tony-winning musical by Mel Brooks will run July 27 through 29. No casting has been announced.
Based on the Oscar-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers follows a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant as they concoct a get-rich scheme to bilk their investors out of millions by producing the most notorious flop in history.
Originally starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, The Producers became a Broadway smash when it opened on April 19, 2001. Featuring a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Brooks, the show went on to win 12 Tony Awards and ran for 2,502 performances. Lane and Broderick reprised their roles for a 2005 film adaptation directed by Stroman.
Stroman's wins for The Producers marked the first time a woman won Tony Awards for both Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography in the same year. Stroman has additional Tony Awards for Crazy for You, Show Boat and Contact. She has also earned six other Tony nominations for Steel Pier, The Music Man, Oklahoma!, Big and The Scottsboro Boys.
With a seating capacity of 18,000, the Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the United States. The Hollywood Bowl has presented starry productions of Rent and Hairpsray in past summers.
