Diner Musical From Sheryl Crow Set for Pre-Broadway Run in San Francisco

Diner, the new musical based on the 1982 film of the same name, will have a pre-Broadway world premiere at San Francisco’s SHN Curran Theatre. Directed by three-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes), the musical will feature a book by Oscar winner and original Diner screenwriter Barry Levinson, and music by nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow. Diner will run in San Francisco from October 23 through November 18. The musical now aims to arrive on Broadway in the spring of 2013 rather than the fall 2012. No casting or design team has been announced.

Diner is set in Baltimore, 1959, when six high school friends reunite at the one place they know they'll always belong: the Diner. Now in their twenties, the friends have stumbled into adulthood and struggle to keep from growing apart. Life, love, responsibility–it's all on the table.

The 1982 movie Diner starred Kevin Bacon, Tony winner Ellen Barkin, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Paul Reiser, Mickey Rourke and Daniel Stern. Levinson, who made his directorial debut with Diner, also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for the film. Levinson won the Oscar in 1988 for directing the hit movie Rain Man.
