Suave screen star Blair Underwood is making a doozy of a Broadway debut in the iconic role of Stanley in a fresh Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. He recently stopped by our studio to talk with Broadway.com editor-in-chief Paul Wontorek about playing the brutish anti-hero (who is inciting a sassy audience reaction) opposite Nicole Ari Parker and Daphne Rubin-Vega. Underwood, who says he's sure to leave "the mess" of his high-drama part at the theater (rather than bringing it home to his wife and three kids), is relishing the experience of opening up "a vein" and venting on stage. Underwood cheerfully looks back on his early days as a young actor taking gigs at Busch Gardens (!) to how his breakthrough role on L.A. Law changed his life (not to mention a non-dancing role in '80s breakdancing flick Krush Groove). He also chats about getting in shape for the production and his unique way of tapping into the rhythm and feel of New Orleans, where Streetcar takes place.
