Sons of the Prophet, Tribes and Once Honored by New York Drama Critics' Circle

Stephen Karam's Sons of the Prophet, Nina Raine's Tribes, and Once, which features music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and book by Enda Walsh, were named winners of the 77th annual New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards. Sons of the Prophet took the prize for Best Play, while Tribe won Best Foreign Play and Once garnered the award for Best Musical. Special citations were awarded to Death of a Salesman director Mike Nichols and Signature Theatre Company.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle comprises 26 drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, wire services and websites based in the New York metropolitan area. The award for Best Play, which has been presented since 1936, is the nation's second-oldest theater award, after the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The award for Best Play carries a cash prize of $2,500. A cash award of $1,000 goes to the winner for Best Foreign Play. The prizes are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception to be held on Monday, May 14 at Angus McIndoe Restaurant.
