Stage and screen favorites John Stamos, Cybill Shepherd and Kristin Davis join the cast of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man on July 10. Stamos succeeds Eric McCormack as Senator Joseph Cantwell, Shepherd replaces Candice Bergen as Alice Russell and Davis succeeds Kerry Butler as Mabel Cantwell. The Best Man will play a limited engagement through September 9 at the Schoenfeld Theatre.
Stamos, Shepherd and Davis join current cast members John Larroquette, James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Jefferson Mays and Mark Blum. Tony winner Elizabeth Ashley will replace Lansbury on July 24. Set at the national convention, The Best Man is the story of two political candidates (Stamos and Larroquette) who are both fighting for their party’s nomination for president. Both candidates struggle with the decision to smear their respective opponent’s reputation or take the high road in order to win the race.
Stamos’ Broadway credits include Bye Bye Birdie, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Cabaret and Nine. His film and TV appearances include Full House, ER, General Hospital and the TV adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun.
Shepherd will make her Broadway debut in The Best Man. Her film and TV credits include Taxi Driver, The Last Picture Show, Moonlighting, The L Word, The Client List and The Heartbreak Kid.
Davis will make her Broadway debut in The Best Man. Best known as Charlotte on the HBO series Sex and the City, her additional film and TV credits include Melrose Place, Seinfeld and Friends. She appeared off-Broadway in The Exonerated.
