Jeremy Jordan spends his nights on Broadway leading the newsboy strike in the hit musical Newsies, and now the Tony nominee’s days will be extra busy as he joins the cast of the Broadway-themed TV series Smash. Broadway.com caught up with Jordan just before he was set to report for duty on the NBC drama.
“I’m so excited, “ Jordan said of his first day, which will be spent in a recording studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Though Jordan suggested he’ll be singing early on during his appearance, he wouldn’t reveal specific details of what he’ll be recording that day.
Earlier press reports have described Jordan’s character as a “sexy Brooklyn-born singer with a self-destructive streak.” No word yet on if that sexiness will come in to play with Smash leading ladies Ivy (Megan Hilty) or newly single Karen (Katharine McPhee). “I don’t know who I’m going to be working with yet,” Jordan said, “but I’m very excited to be around my old friends Savannah Wise and Wesley Taylor. We all did Rock of Ages together.”
As a real-life Broadway leading man, Jordan found the first season of Smash irresistible: “Of course I watched it. I had to!” Now that he's joining the series, the star looks forward to channeling the bad-boy charisma he displayed in Bonnie & Clyde. “I think I’m bringing a young male energy to it, which I don’t think they really had in the first season” Jordan said. “They wanted sexy energy—at least that’s what they told me.” Bring it on, Jeremy!
Smash will return to NBC in 2013.
