Salma Hayek Reflects on Her Nixed Broadway Dreams: 'It Would Have Been the Worst Musical Ever'

Performing on stage puts Salma Hayek on the verge of nervous breakdown.

If you’re waiting for Oscar nominee Salma Hayek to follow in the footsteps of Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and other A-list actresses who've appeared on Broadway, don’t hold your breath! Hayek recently told The London Evening Standard that anxiety issues have kept her from appearing on the Great White Way.

“I have really bad stage fright,” Hayek said. “There have been a couple of times where I’ve said yes to stage projects, but when we’ve got a little closer I couldn’t. I almost did a musical on Broadway, but I just couldn’t. It would have been the worst musical ever.”

The musical Hayek referred to is likely Jeffrey Lane and David Yazbek’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In 2009, Hayek participated in a reading of the Lincoln Center Theater musical alongside Jessica Biel and Matthew Morrison. Hayek played the role of Pepa, which eventually went to Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott when the musical premiered on Broadway in 2010.
