David Mamet's The Anarchist, Starring Patti LuPone and Debra Winger, Begins Broadway Run

David Mamet’s new play The Anarchist begins previews November 13 at Broadway's Golden Theatre. The two-women show stars Oscar nominee Debra Winger and Tony winner Patti LuPone. Opening night is set for December 2, with the limited run scheduled to play through February 17, 2013.

Mamet directs the world premiere of his own work. Set in a women’s prison, the play follows a formerly radical inmate of 35 years (LuPone) who is seeking parole. Winger plays the parole advisor who intends to deny the prisoner her freedom.

LuPone is a two-time Tony winner for Evita and Gypsy. She earned additional nominations for Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, The Robber Bridgegroom and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Last season she appeared on Broadway in the concert engagement An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin. Winger, who is making her Broadway debut, is a three-time Academy Award nominee whose film work includes An Officer and a Gentleman, Terms of Endearment and Rachel Getting Married.

The Anarchist features set and costume design by Patrizia Von Brandenstein and lighting design by Jeff Croiter.
