Sheryl Crow Musical Diner Postpones Broadway Engagement Until Fall

Diner, Sheryl Crow’s musical adaptation of the 1982 film, will postpone its Broadway engagement. The production, which was originally scheduled to open at a yet to be determined Broadway theater on April 10, 2013, is now targeted to open in the fall of 2013. No casting has been announced at this time.

Directed and choreographed by three-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall, Diner will feature a book by original film screenwriter Barry Levinson and music and lyrics by Crow. Set in Baltimore in 1959, Diner tells the story of six high school friends who reunite at the one place they’ll always belong: the diner. Now in their twenties, the friends have stumbled into adulthood and struggle to keep from growing apart. The new musical is based on the film of the same name starring Kevin Bacon, Ellen Barkin, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Paul Reiser, Mickey Rourke and Daniel Stern. The musical recently scrapped a pre-Broadway engagement in San Francisco. 

“We presented a four week fully-staged workshop of Diner in New York last November at which we received positive feedback from investors and theater owners,” producer Scott Zeiger said in a statement. “We are excited about our progress and it has become very clear the direction in which we need to continue to take this new American musical. Early fall dates work better for all involved and an announcement of Broadway theater and dates will be forthcoming.”

The Diner creative team includes scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Paul Tazewell, lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski, sound designer Scott Lehrer and orchestrations and music supervision by Mitchell Froom.
