Anne Hathaway May Lead a New Taming of the Shrew Movie

Anne Hathaway is going from tackling Victor Hugo to taking on William Shakespeare. The Golden Globe-winning Les Miz actress may star in a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, reports The Wrap.

Hathaway would ostensibly play Kate, the play’s titular “shrew,” a strong-willed albeit nagging woman whose suitor puts her through a psychological ringer in order to make her more obedient. The film adaptation will reportedly be a modern-day retelling set in mid-20th century Italy.

Abi Morgan, who penned the Meryl Streep vehicle The Iron Lady and the nude Michael Fassbender vehicle Shame, will write the script for Working Title (the company behind Les Miz).

The Taming of the Shrew has received a number of notable adaptations in its 420 year history, including a Broadway musical (Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate), a teen comedy (1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You), multiple radio and television adaptations and a popular Hollywood film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Hathaway is no stranger to Shakespeare having starred in the 2010 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night.
