The Ryan Murphy-helmed screen adaptation of Larry Kramer's award-winning play The Normal Heart won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie at the Primetime Emmy Awards on August 25. Meanwhile, Glenn Weiss won for Outstanding Directing of a Variety Special for the 67th Annual Tony Awards. Broadway vets who also took home prizes included 2014 Tony winner Bryan Cranston for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Breaking Bad and Jessica Lange for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for American Horror Story: Coven.
Other notable Great White Way alums to win the Emmy included Jim Parsons for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Big Bang Theory, Julianna Margulies for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Good Wife and Allison Janney for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Mom. This was Janney's second win this year and sixth overall; at the Creative Arts Emmys, she won for Masters of Sex. Anna Gunn, currently appearing off-Broadway in Sex With Strangers, also picked up an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Breaking Bad.
Along with Janney, other Broadway success stories at the Creative Arts Emmys, held on August 16, were the 67th annual Tony Awards, which garnered two additional trophies, including one for Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s opening number. Other Broadway alums to pick up Creative Arts awards included Uzo Aduba and Joe Morton.
