Broadway Grosses: Kinky Boots Continues to Raise Audiences Up; It's Only a Play Starts Off Strong

'Kinky Boots' landed in the top five before going on the road.

Labor Day weekend came and went, and there was at least one drag queen who can say she werked hard for the money. The Tony-winning Kinky Boots ended its second summer back in the top five grossing shows, coming in just short of $1.3 million. In a couple of days, New York won't be the only place to experience the Land of Lola; the national tour of the hit musical kicks off on September 4 in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, a newcomer to the Great White Way, It's Only a Play, began preview performances with a strong start. In its five shows last week, the production, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, exceeded capacity at 101.07%. Numbers also climbed for Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Andrew Rannells' second week of performances as the rock goddess reached 93.06% capacity, a slight but macroscopic boost from the week prior.
