Between Riverside and Crazy will return off-Broadway as part of Second Stage Theatre’s 2014-15 season. The play by Stephen Adly Guirgis premiered at off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company this summer. Directed by Austin Pendleton, the production will begin on January 16, 2015 at the Tony Kiser Theatre, with opening night set for February 11. The new addition to the season lineup follows the announcement that plans to stage the U.S. premiere of American Psycho around the same time had been canceled.
Five members of the Atlantic Theater production are set to return for the Second Stage mounting: Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson, Victor Almanzar, Elizabeth Canavan, Rosal Colón and Liza Colón-Zayas. Additional casting will be announced later.
Henderson received a Tony nomination for his performance in Fences and recently appeared on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun. Alamanzar made his Broadway debut in Between Riverside and Crazy. Canavan’s stage credits include The Little Flower of East Orange, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Our Lady of 121st Street and Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, all by Riverside playwright Guirgis. Colón has appeared on Broadway in A Free Man of Color and The Motherf***er with the Hat. Colón-Zayas returns to Second Stage following performances in Water by the Spoonful and Living Out.
Between Riverside and Crazy tells the story of Walter “Pops” Washington (Henderson), an ex-cop and recent widower, who, with his recently paroled son Junior, struggle to hold on to one of the last rent-stabilized apartments on Riverside Drive. The Old Days seem to be dead and gone for the two as old wounds are opened, sketchy new houseguests turn up and a final ultimatum is delivered.
The production features scenic design by Walt Spangler, costume design by Alexis Forte, lighting design by Keith Parham and sound design and original music by Ryan Rumery.
