The rumors were true! Les Miz Oscar winner Anne Hathaway has been tapped to lead the Public Theater’s production of George Brant’s Grounded. Tony winner Julie Taymor will direct the one-woman show off-Broadway. Performances will begin on April 7 in the Anspacher Theater, where it is set to open officially on April 23 and run through May 17.
Grounded explores the consequences of war and the struggle to find a balance with home life. Hathaway plays a fighter pilot reassigned to a remote-controlled drone. She endures 12-hour shifts hunting targets from her Air Force trailer, then goes home to her family in the suburbs for another 12 hours. The play previously ran in New York last year at Walkerspace in TriBeCa and starred Hannah Cabell.
In addition to her Oscar-winning turn as Fantine in Les Miserables, Hathaway's many additional screen credits include Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises, Love & Other Drugs, Bride Wars, Rachel Getting Married, The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries. She has appeared on the Public Theater stage previously in their 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and in Carnival with City Center Encores!.
Grounded will feature scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, sound design by Will Pickens, projection design by Peter Nigrini and original music by Elliot Goldenthal.
