Tony winner Patti LuPone will return to the New York stage in the previously announced premiere of Shows for Days, an autobiographical play by Douglas Carter Beane. The Lincoln Center production will begin performances off-Broadway on June 4 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Opening night is set for June 29. Jerry Zaks will direct.
LuPone, who is currently appearing in the L.A. Opera production of The Ghosts of Versailles, took home Tony Awards for her performances in Gypsy and Evita. Her additional stage credits include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Sweeney Todd and Anything Goes. Her screen appearances include American Horror Story: Coven, Girls (on which she played a fictional version of herself), Driving Miss Daisy, Witness, Parker, City by the Sea, Life Goes On, 30 Rock and Ugly Betty.
Shows For Days, inspired by Beane’s own life in theater, follows 14-year-old Car, who becomes involved in community theater in Reading, Pennsylvania at the Prometheus Theatre. The theater is led by a woman who dedicates her life to directing, designing and starring in the group’s shows. Additional casting and the design team will be announced later.
