Musical Version of Sleepless in Seattle in Development

Composer/lyricist Leslie Bricusse Jekyll & Hyde, Victor/Victoria, Stop the World – I Want to Get Off has signed on to write the score for a musical version of the hit film Sleepless in Seattle. The movie’s Oscar-nominated co-author Jeff Arch will write the book for the show, to be produced by David Shor. Joel Zwick, best known as a director of TV sitcoms and the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will direct.

According to a press announcement, Sleepless in Seattle is aiming for a first reading in May and an official opening in early 2010. No casting or venues have been announced.

“We are thrilled to have finally secured the theatrical rights and are grateful to so many people, including Tom Hanks, for helping to facilitate the process,” Shor said in a statement, citing the star of the 1993 romantic comedy film, which was directed and co-written by Nora Ephron and co-starred Meg Ryan. The producer added that Sleepless in Seattle–The Musical will remain pegged to 1993, reflecting the culture, fashions and music of the era. According tot he press release, “Eighteen songs have already been written for the musical, with more on the way.”
