The Story:
Set in the 1880s, In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play is a comedy about marriage, intimacy and electricity. It centers on a doctor and his wife whose household is upended by the doctor’s experimental therapy with a surprising new electronic device.
Based On:
Playwright Sarah Ruhl was inspired to write the play after reading The Technology of Orgasm by Rachel P. Maines, which the reveals real-life medical history of treating women diagnosed with “hysteria.”

The play premiered at Berkeley Rep in January 2009 before its Broadway debut.
