Heathers is getting a musical makeover, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A stage adaptation of the 1988 cult comedy, which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, is being developed by Andy Fickman.

Fickman is returning to his musical roots. The director of the just-released Race to Witch Mountain is collaborating with writer-lyricist Kevin Murphy, who helped Fickman musicalize the cult film Reefer Madness. Larry O’Keefe, the Tony-nominated composer of Legally Blonde, is writing the music.

Heathers follows Veronica, who is reluctantly part of a clique run by a trio of popular high school girls—all named Heather. When Veronica meets the mysteriously dangerous new guy at school, she starts pulling away from the Heathers, and suddenly some of the more popular students start showing up dead… with suicide notes.

The project has the blessing of screenwriter Daniel Waters, who controls the rights to the material. A recent reading starred Reefer alums Kristen Bell as Veronica and Christian Campbell as J.D., with Jenna Leigh Green, BrokeDown Cadillac lead singer Corri English and Christine Lakin as the three Heathers.

Fickman and his creative team are aiming to mount a regional production in 2010, with a subsequent Broaway run.
