Tony winner Debra Monk is coming to Chicago. She will begin performances as Matron Mama Morton on September 6, a production spokesperson confirmed to Broadway.com.
Monk won a Tony Award for her work in Redwood Curtain and received Tony nominations for performances in Picnic and Steel Pier. She also appeared on Broadway in Prelude to a Kiss, Nick & Nora, Company, Ah, Wilderness!, Thou Shalt Not and Reckless. In recent years, she has been featured on the small screen in the series Kristin starring her Steel Pier co-star Kristin Chenoweth, the television movie of The Music Man and both EloiseABC movies.
Chicago currently stars Charlotte d'Amboise as Roxie Hart, Luba Mason as Velma Kelly, Carol Woods as Matron Mama Morton, Christopher McDonald as Billy Flynn, Ray Bokhour as Amos Hart and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine. Woods will leave the Broadway company of Chicago on September 4 and will rejoin the revival's national tour. Brooke Shields is scheduled to step into the role of Roxie Hart on September 9, replacing d'Amboise. Huey Lewis is set to begin performances as Billy Flynn on November 1.
