After spending his childhood fronting the Osmond Brothers, after the Donny & Marie years, Donny Osmond turned his talents to the stage, tweaking his goody-goody image as Gaston in Broadway's Beauty and the Beast and touring in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. So it made perfect sense that he and partner Kym Johnson would turn to Kander & Ebb for their debut performance on Dancing with the Stars.
On the September 21 season premiere of the hit ballroom competition, Donny and Kym did a dapper foxtrot to Velma Kelly's anthem “All That Jazz” from Chicago. Obviously, Donny can dance. In fact, during his taped intro, he was bold enough to set the goal of besting his sister Marie, who placed third (based on likeability, not talent—plus she fainted onstage) in a previous season. After his foxtrot, Donny was feeling confident enough to do a little end-zone-style celebratory leap. But not so fast! Imperious head judge Len Goodman declared the routine “too theatrical,” with “too much razzmatazz.” He gave the couple a 6 out of 10, though fellow judges Bruno Tognoli and Burn the Floor producer Carrie Ann Inaba deemed it worthy of a 7.
Donny and Kym rallied in the new relay round, besting three other couples, including cheeky skateboarder Louie Vito, who had earlier said of Osmond, “The only high score you're getting is on your birthday card.”
Frankly, the most interesting thing about Donny’s appearance on DTWS was his cheering section. Marie was on the front row (naturally), but her escort? None other than Jermaine Jackson, Michael’s outspoken older brother. Don't you know he'd like to be out there foxtrotting next season?
