Getting to Know You: Tidbits about Billy Elliot’s Triple-Threat Stars

How well do you know the Billy Elliot boys? By now we’ve all been introduced to the hot new show’s title trio, David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, but there’s way more to these multitalented stars than the traditional biographical stats Alvarez, 14, hails from Cuba by way of Montreal, Canada; Kowalik, 13, is a proud Wantagh, New York native; and Kulish, 14, is a California boy from San Diego, just in case you wanted to know. The three newly minted stars graciously took time out of their absolutely crazy pre-opening schedules to fill out our informal personality quiz, giving you a chance to better know the likes, dislikes and inner workings of the boys behind Billy.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
David:
I look for my mother or my father.
Kiril: Brush my teeth, take a shower and make breakfast.
Trent: Eat breakfast.

What’s something special you keep in your dressing room?
David: A sacred stone.
Kiril: Nothing.
Trent: I keep my special things at home.

Do you have any superstitions?
David: Yes, many.
Kiril: No.
Trent: I knock on wood a lot.

What are you most disciplined about?
David: The care of my body.
Kiril: Warming up before a show.
Trent: Math.

In what ways are you lazy?
David: Keeping my bedroom organized.
Kiril: I hate getting out of bed in the morning.
Trent: Adding pages to my script.

What is your favorite… Snack?
David: Chocolate ice-cream.
Kiril: Balance energy bars.
Trent: Pizza-flavored Gold Fish.

David: Classical.

David: Math.

David: That so many talented people live here.
Kiril: There is great food and a lot of energy.
Trent: The restaurants.

David: Classical ballet, specifically the Romantic style.
Kiril: Ballet.
Trent: Tap.

Do you have any bad habits? What are they?
David: Yes, but I don’t want to say because I get embarrassed.
Kiril: No comment.
Trent: Forgetting what day it is.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
David: To be able to travel to the past and future.
Kiril: Flying.
Trent: Spider powers.

What profession would you chose if you weren’t a dancer/actor?
David: A medical doctor.
Kiril: Doctor.
Trent: Professional basketball player.

What’s the biggest misconception about people your age?
David: That we can easily stop wanting to play.
Kiril: I’m not sure.
Trent: That we’re not serious about anything.

How are you different from the other boys playing Billy?
David: I only knew classical ballet when I was cast. I had to learn everything else from scratch, even speaking English.
Kiril: No comment.
Trent: I’m not bilingual.

What’s the hardest thing about being in Billy Elliot?
David: To reach the acting quality of the amazing adult cast members.
Kiril: Combining acting, dancing, singing and the dialect, and having the stamina to get through the show.
Trent: Keeping my stamina up.

What’s the best part about being in Billy Elliot?
David: The opportunity to work with [director] Stephen Daldry and the adult cast.
Kiril: Performing in front of an audience and getting know the cast.
Trent: Experiencing a Broadway career at age 13.
