About the Show

The big screen adaptations of the Broadway hits Hairspray and Sweeney Todd were both nominated in the category of Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for the 65h Annual Golden Globe Awards. Across the Universe, the visionary musical from Lion King director Julie Taymor, also received a nomination in the category, which also includes non-musicals Charlie Wilson's War and Juno. Widely considered a precursor to the Oscars, the Golden Globes will be presented on January 13, 2008, in a ceremony televised from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Sweeney Todd, which opens in select theaters on Friday, December 21, received a total of four nominations, including a Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy nod for Johnny Depp, as well as a Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy mention for his Mrs. Lovett, Helena Bonham Carter. Director Tim Burton was also honored with a nomination in the Best Director category.

Summer hit Hairspray received three nominations, including a Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy nomination for newcomer Nikki Blonsky, who plays Tracy Turnblad, and a Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy nomination for John Travolta, who plays Edna Turnblad. Although the film included several new songs written for the movie unlike Sweeney Todd, none were honored in the Best Song category.

Amy Adams received a Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy nomination for the Disney comedy Enchanted, which features a handful of songs by Broadway songwriters Alan Menken music and Stephen Schwartz lyrics. One of those songs, “That's How You Know,” was nominated in the category of Original Song.

Another nomination of note for theater lovers is the Best Performance by a Supporting Actress nod for stage regular Amy Ryan for her work in the Ben Affleck-directed thriller Gone Baby Gone.
