Little Women, the Broadway musical adaptation of the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott starring 2005 Tony nominee Sutton Foster, will play its final performance at the Virginia Theatre on Sunday, May 22. At the time of its closing, Little Women will have played 55 preview and 137 regular performances.

Little Women, which tells of four sisters coming of age in Civil War New England, opened on January 23, 2005 to mixed reviews. In his Broadway.com Review, Eric Grode said: “Little Women isn't the most sophisticated or rapturously melodic show you'll find on Broadway. But this chamber-size musical pulses with a generous affection for its source material and a refreshing realization that Broadway audiences don't always need to be wowed. The performances of Sutton Foster as Jo and especially Maureen McGovern as the materfamilias Marmee root the drama with a heartfelt confidence that overrides the show's shortcomings… A comfortable, honest, highly satisfying night at the theater.”

Although Foster received the show's sole Tony Award nomination, Little Women was honored with seven 2005 Broadway.com Audience Award nominations. Broadway.com readers chose to nominate the show in the categories of Favorite New Broadway Musical, Favorite Leading Actress in a Broadway Musical Foster, Favorite Featured Actress in a a Broadway Musical McGovern, Favorite Breakthrough Performance-Male Danny Gurwin, Favorite Breakthrough Performance-Female Jenny Powers, Favorite Diva Performance Foster and Favorite New Broadway Song, for the Act One closer “Astonishing.”

Little Women is set to start a 30-city national tour in San Diego in August. McGovern will recreate her Broadway performance as Marmee for the tour.

Little Women features a book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindy Dickstein. Susan H. Schulman is the show's director. In addition to Foster and McGovern, the tuner stars Megan McGinnis as Beth, Powers as Meg, Amy McAlexander as Amy and Gurwin as Laurie. Janet Carroll, Robert Stattel and Jim Weitzer complete the cast.
