Any time Tony Award winner Julie White sets foot onstage, you know you’re going to laugh. Partner her with current Weeds funnyman and Broadway veteran Justin Kirk, longtime television star Mark-Paul Gosselaar, playwright Theresa Rebeck and director Scott Ellis, and send them all off on a comedic romp through the backstage goings-on of a fictional Broadway show and you’ve got the laugh-riot The Understudy, currently playing at Roundabout’s off-Broadway Laura Pels Theatre. Given the theatrical subject matter (White plays a harried stage manager trying to run a put-in rehearsal for title star Kirk, the understudy to Gosselaar, a Hollywood hunk making the cross to Broadway), of course Broadway’s best were out en masse for the show’s officialy debut on November 5. Everyone from 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin to megaproducer Clive Davis to Tony Award winners like Boyd Gaines, Andrea Martin and director Susan Stroman trotted the red carpet in support of the show’s starring trio, who were honored to share their big night with such starry company.
