About the Show

Director/choreographer Martha Clarke will reinvent her acclaimed production of Garden of Earthly Delights in a 12-week limited engagement at off-Broadway’s Minetta Lane Theatre this fall. The show will begin performances on November 8 and open on November 19, running through January 18, 2009.

Garden of Earthly Delights brings Hieronymus Bosch’s provocative painting to life, taking audiences on a journey from creation through Eden, earthly existence, damnation and redemption. Clarke’s new production will feature state-of-the-art aerial devices created by the “Flying by Foy” workshop. The piece blurs the lines between theater, dance, art and music to create a world of its own, a synthesis of visual and performing magic that is sexy, evocative, and unlike anything ever seen on stage.

The original production of Garden of Earthly Delights premiered at St. Clement’s in 1984 and enjoyed a groundbreaking run at the Minetta Lane in 1987. It was honored with a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, an Obie Award for Richard Peaslee’s original score, and a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for choreography.

Garden of Earthly Delights features Sophie Bortolussi, Benjamin G. Bowman, Daniel Clifton, Marjorie Folkman, General McArthur Hambrick, Whitney V. Hunter, Gabby Malone, Jennifer Nugent, Matt Rivera, Jenny Sandler, Isadora Wolfe; with musicians Wayne Hankin winds, Egil Rostad cello and Arthur Solari music director, percussion. The production includes set and lighting design by Christopher Akerlind and costume design by Jane Greenwood.
