Ott, 25, saw the show over a year and a half ago and was inspired to pop the question at the musical revue. He was not aware anyone had ever done it before. “I’m the youngest of four,” Ott explained to Broadway.com. “Pretty much all the average everyday things have happened with my family—the diamond in the champagne glass, the proposal on Valentine’s Day.I wanted something interesting and something we would remember.”
Ott called the Westside Theatre with his proposal plan. The staff said that he would need to do is leave his intended near the end of the show and meet a staff member in the lobby. The Westside staff informed Ott he could give a speech or sing or whatever he wanted. Ott, however, wanted it to be spontaneous.
Near the end of Saturday’s performance, Ott excused himself by telling Boyce he had to run to the restroom. A few minutes later, at the curtain call, he burst onto stage exclaiming: “Where’s the bathroom?” His girlfriend was, needless to say, mortified. “She is looking at me like, `Get off the stage!’” Ott then gave an impromptu speech professing his love for Boyce. “I crouched down at the front of the stage and said: `She’s the kind of women you just want to spend the rest of your life with.’ Then I said: `Do you want to spend the rest of your life with me?’” Boyce, with tears streaming down her face, said yes.
