A modern re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set against the gang-filled world of late 1950s New York City, West Side Story centers on the love story between a Polish boy and a Puerto Rican girl. The tuner features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
West Side Story, directed and choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins, first opened on Broadway on September 26, 1957. That original production ran for a whopping 732 performances before closing on June 27, 1959. One of the best known modern musicals, West Side Story has been revived on the Great White Way three times, the last time in the form of a 1980 mounting starring Debbie Allen.
