What Is the Story of American Idiot?

This new musical follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans, lead by friends Johnny, Tunny and Will, as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunney enters the armed forces, Michael is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day's album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.

Critics’ Reviews

Your heart will pound, your pupils will dilate, you will sweat and breathe hard. For the 90 minutes that American Idiot has you in its white-knuckle grasp, it will electrify and overwhelm your senses.

Review by David Cote from Time Out New York

American Idiot comes to explosive life on the Broadway stage in a heart-pounding, punk-rock opera that sounds the unmistakable siren of generational shift. The show, delivers a thick, gorgeous head rush of a musical soundscape without current Broadway parallel. It turns out to offer the kind of sensual lushness that a lot more traditional musicals would kill to emulate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is American Idiot Like?
An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot, features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line. The stage is festooned by a collage of art and newspaper clippings as well as over a dozen embedded TV monitors. The televisions flash everything from broadcast news, graphic warning messages and clips from recognizable TV series—all while an onstage band performs, often with the actors picking up instruments themselves. The material is dark with some characters hitting rock bottom, but the rousing score keeps things upbeat.

Is American Idiot Good for Kids?
While teens will dig the rock music, recognize many of Green Day’s hits and possibly relate to the angst-filled themes, the subject matter is mature. One character looks to alcohol to deal with his girlfriend’s unwanted pregnancy, while another witnesses firsthand the violent ramifications of war. The characters open their mouths to inhale drugs almost as frequently as they do to sing the score’s f-word-laden lyrics.
