Colman Domingo in A Boy and His Soul

Soul man Colman Domingo will continue to share his story off-Broadway.

Producer Elizabeth Ireland McCann is planning a commercial off-Broadway transfer of Colman Domingo’s acclaimed solo play A Boy and His Soul, which is set to close on November 1 after a seven-week run (including a two-week extension) at the Vineyard Theatre. Dates and a theater for the transfer will be announced at a later date.

A Boy and His Soul centers on Domingo’s memories of growing up in Philadelphia in the 70s and 80s amid the cool, smooth sounds of soul, R&B and disco. The play depicts a family of vibrant children and their parents, along with its celebration of city life and the music that underscores it. Domingo explained the genesis of the show in a First Person essay for Broadway.com.

The commercial transfer of A Boy and His Soul will mark the third time that McCann has produced a show featuring Domingo: He was part of the Broadway cast of Lisa Kron’s Well and won raves for his performance in Stew’s Passing Strange.
