The Deep Throat Sex Scandal - Off-Broadway

A sinfully entertaining play about freedom.

Story

What Is the Story of Deep Throat Sex Scandal?
Deep Throat Sex Scandal follows the rise of adult films in 1970s America, specifically the filming of the now iconic movie, Deep Throat. The first act follows the creation of the film itself with an aspiring actor, Harry Reems, hopping into bed with the shy, young Linda Lovelace (in what is widely recognized as the first full-length adult film to feature scripts, scenery and other elements of traditional movies). To strike up more business, the producers purposely spark up a little controversy surrounding the film, and soon lawmakers from Memphis are targeting the flick for its “indecency,” with Reems serving as their hated poster boy.

Should I See It?

What Is Deep Throat Sex Scandal Like?
The first act tells the story of the film’s actual creation, while Act Two finds Reems in court in Memphis. Questions regarding the First Amendment and what counts as indecency are frequently discussed. Reems often speaks to the audience to fill them in on details of the case and several actors play multiple parts. The show often has a tongu-in-check sense of humor, especially during the scenes recalling Deep Throat’s production, but it still maintains a mature discussion on politics. The play also heavily features screen projections to provide a sense of setting as well as clips from popular music from the ‘70s.

Is Deep Throat Sex Scandal Good for Kids?
The play’s title should make it pretty clear this is one show children should not see. Despite its positive messages about free speech and tolerance, there’s plenty of onstage nudity, sex talk and drug use.
