In the Heights Cleans Up Its Real-Life Neighborhood

The onstage residents of Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights celebrate their vivacious neighborhood nightly at the Richard Rodgers Theater. But what audience members don’t know is many members of the acclaimed Broadway cast live in the real Washington Heights, trekking uptown post-show to their own happy abodes. The show’s Afra Hines recently joined the ranks of Heights-ers in the Heights and loves it, but noticed that trash was marring her new ‘hood. Hines quickly assembled her Broadway buddies and joined with the local activism group Revolucion Latina for a little community service, gathering a dedicated trash-collecting crew who took to the streets on August 17, garbage bags in hand. Broadway.com tagged along as the Heights family gave back to its namesake community, and we have to say we’re pretty proud of these do-gooding Heights-dwellers.
