Story

What Is the Story of Our Town?
Meet the good citizens of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, circa 1901. An omniscient Stage Manager describes this small New England town and introduces its residents, including the Gibbs and Webb families, who live next door to each other. In three acts, audiences witness a day in the life of Grover’s Corners, celebrate the marriage of Emily Webb and George Gibbs, and hear the reflections of those who have died.

Should I See It?

What Is Our Town Like?
Arguably the most famous American play, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town has entertained generations of audiences (and become a staple of high schools across the country). Director David Cromer’s acclaimed off-Broadway production shakes the dust off the play with a deceptively simple, modern acting style delivered by an outstanding cast dressed in 21st-century clothing. The play’s many famous scenes—at choir practice, the soda shop, the wedding, the cemetery—take on fresh meaning in this mounting of the play, and Cromer includes a show-stopping effect at the end that leaves audiences enthralled. Even if you’ve seen Our Town many times, you’ll discover something new in this moving (and fast-moving—three acts in two hours) production.

Is Our Town Good for Kids?
Our Town is an excellent first play for school-age children, but kids need to be able to sit quietly, particularly at this production, in which the audience is seated on three sides of the action in a small theater and remains visible at all times.
