Story

What Is the Story of Passion?
Passion is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical of romantic obsession. Based on the Italian movie Passione d’amore, Passion is the story of Giorgio, a soldier, and Clara, a woman with a husband and child, who are deeply in love, but their sublime happiness is disrupted when Giorgio is transferred to an isolated outpost. Here he meets Fosca, a homely and ill woman who is the cousin of the regiment’s commanding officer. Fosca soon falls in love with Giorgio and pursues him relentlessly. The original Broadway production, directed by Lapine, opened in May 1994 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
