Road Show

The Public Theater presents a new musical by Sondheim and Weidman.

Cerveris and Gemignani to Star in Road Show, Re-Do of Sondheim's Bounce

Michael Cerveris and Alexander Gemignani will star in the Public Theater's forthcoming New York premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Road Show, the musical formerly known as Bounce. The show, which features a book by John Weidman and will be directed and designed by John Doyle, begins previews on October 28 and will open on November 18. The limited off-Broadway engagement is scheduled to run through December 28.

"Over the last three years, John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim have done transformative work on the project we have now re-titled Road Show," Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis said in a statement. "John Doyle has assembled an extraordinary team of actor/singers, and I am confident that the result will be a revelation."

Spanning 40 years from the Alaskan Gold Rush to the Florida real estate boom in the '30s, Road Show is the story of the Mizner brothers, whose quest for the American dream turns into a test of morality and judgment that changes their lives in unexpected ways.

In addition to Cerveris as Wilson Mizner and Gemignani as Addison Mizner, the cast of Road Show will include Alma Cuervo Wicked national tour as Mama; Aisha de Haas Caroline, or Change in the Ensemble; Claybourne Elder White Widow as Hollis; Colleen Fitzpatrick Mother Courage and Her Children in the Ensemble; Mylinda Hull Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in the Ensemble; Mel Johnson, Jr. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the Ensemble; Orville Mendoza Adrift in Macao in the Ensemble; Anne L. Nathan Sunday in the Park With George in the Ensemble; Tom Nelis Iphigenia 2.0 in the Ensemble; William Parry Passion as Papa; Matt Stocke The Wedding Singer in the Ensemble; William Youmans The Farnsworth Invention in the Ensemble; and Kristine Zbornik A Catered Affair in the Ensemble.

Cerveris, a Tony winner for the revival of Sondheim and Weidman's Assassins, most recently starred in Lincoln Center Theater's production of Cymbeline. He received Tony nominations for playing Kurt Weill in Love/Musik and for his performance in the title role in Doyle's Broadway revival of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Other Broadway credits include Titanic and Tommy. Off-Broadway, he played Kent in the Public's 2007 production of King Lear.

Gemignani appeared alongside Cerveris as the Beadle in Doyle's production of Sweeney Todd and most recently played the Boatman and Dennis in the Roundabout's revival of Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George. He starred as Jean Valjean in the 2006 Broadway revival of Les Miserables.

Originally titled Wise Guys, Road Show was workshopped in 1999 with Nathan Lane and Victor Garber as Addison and Wilson Mizner. Renamed Bounce, it was produced at the Kennedy Center in 2003 with a cast led by Howard McGillin, Richard Kind and Michele Pawk.
