Story

What Is the Story of Romeo & Juliet?
Romeo & Juliet is an enduring, tragic romance written by William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. Romeo and Juliet meet and find true love, despite the hatred between their two noble families. The bitter war between the Montagues and the Capulets—one act of violence begetting another—forces the couple to hide their relationship and, ultimately, take their own lives.

Should I See It?

What Is Romeo & Juliet Like?
Director Tea Alagic maintains the backbone of the story—unattainable love—while establishing her own daring, modernized vision. Julian Cihi and Elizabeth Olsen, as the young lovers, along with supporting players Daphne Rubin-Vega as the Nurse and T.R. Knight as Mercutio, draw the audience into their own universe from the very start. Romeo & Juliet remains relevant because we all have memories of teenage love, with its visceral emotions reinforcing the play’s staying power.

Is Romeo & Juliet Good for Kids?
Two unlucky children of enemy families become lovers and commit suicide. High drama, violence and Shakespeare’s language might not be appropriate for children, but this production's sly and cutting-edge approach to the timeless story might appeal to teens who have read the play in school.
