About the Show

The Atlantic Theater company production of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore is headed to Broadway. The show will begin performances at the Lyceum Theatre on April 18 in preparation for a May 3 opening.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore is set in 1993 in County Galway on the rocky island of Inishmore, off the coast of Ireland. Padraic David Wilmot is a terrorist with no feeling for those he blows up, but he has an obsessive attachment to Thomas, his beloved cat. Someone has killed poor wee Thomas. Was it an accident or an execution? Either way, the death must be concealed before 'Mad Padraic' returns from a stint of torture and bombing. Otherwise the recriminations will be horrifying.

The Lieutenant of Inishmore, directed by Wilson Milam, began previews at the Atlantic Theater Company on February 8 and officially opened on February 27 to mixed to positive reviews. In his Broadway.com Review of the play, Rob Kendt wrote: "A series of cheap shots, literally, at the loony fringes of the Irish Republican cause, the play paints true believers, opportunists, and passive bystanders in such cartoonish terms that the angry sneer of its satire--what McDonagh has called his 'pacifist rage' at the absurdly ceaseless cycle of bloodshed over Ulster--can't be taken seriously."

In addition to Wilmot, the cast includes Jeff Binder, Kerry Condon, Andrew Connolly, Dashiell Eaves, Peter Gerety, Domhnall Gleeson and Tony-nominated actor Brian d'Arcy James.

The Lyceum Theatre has been vacant since Souvenir closed on January 8. It was expected to house The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial this spring, but that production recently announced it would instead occupy the Schoenfeld Theatre.
