Description

Cynthia Nixon is going back to school this fall as a tough-minded schoolteacher in 1930s Scotland. The Sex and the City star and 2006 Tony Award winner headlines the New Group's much-anticipated off-Broadway revival of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The play examines the complex motives and beliefs of the title character, who decides to transform a select group of students into the crème de la crème at the all-girls' Marcia Blaine School in Edinburgh. Her followers dub themselves "the Brodie Set," but when Miss Brodie's Fascist sympathies surface, the teacher-student relationship assumes a more dangerous tone. Based on the popular 1961 novel by Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was transformed into a play by Jay Presson Allen in 1968. The title role has been a lucky charm for actresses: Zoe Caldwell won a Tony for her performance on Broadway, and Maggie Smith won an Oscar for the 1969 film version. Now a new generation can get to know this charismatic, controversial teacher in a production directed by New Group artistic director Scott Elliott.
