A new musical telling the story of legendary composers Irving Berlin and Scott Joplin.
Is that piano music we hear wafting from off-Broadway's Laura Pels Theatre? It should be, since that's where the Roundabout Theatre Company's Tin Pan Alley Rag made its debut on July 14. The new "play with music," penned by Mark Saltzman, imagines a meeting between two of the most influential American composers in history, ragtime king Scott Joplin and icon Irving Berlin, played by Michael Boatman and Michael Therriault, respectively. In the show, the pair weave interlapping stories of love, loss and the early New York music biz, all while wowing audiences with memorable tunes including "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "I Love a Piano" and "The Maple Leaf Rag." The show also features a cast of 10 super troupers, who help play out the true stories behind the composers' most compelling works. The show got the seal of approval from two major VIPs on opening night: Irving Berlin's own grandchildren, Edward and Caroline Emmet, who were among the first to compliment the cast on their job well done.
