Vanities

Three friends face growing up, getting older and getting over it.

A Joyful Opening for New Off-B'way Musical Vanities

A Joyful Opening for New Off-B'way Musical Vanities

When chick-powered play Vanities originally opened off-Broadway some 30 years ago it was an immediate hit, running over five years and becoming one of the most successful off-Broadway productions in history. Now the familiar saga of cheerleaders Mary, Joanne and Kathy is back, with a little something extra: music. The musical adaptation of the popular stage classic opened at Second Stage Theatre on July 16, with a new generation of theatergoers popping in to watch three best friends grow up, grow apart and find each other all over again, this time with music by David Kirshenbaum and a new book by original playwright Jack Heifner. The 2009 incarnations of Mary, Joanne and Kathy, played by Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Annelise van der Pol, happily took over Second Stage following their big debut, rounding up their best pals and professional buds for a celebratory night at HB Burger.
